From the Fenmouth studio
Forty vases, one kiln, and a lot of waiting.
We visited Ines Okafor the week she fired batch twelve. Here's how a Halden gets from a bag of clay to your windowsill, and why no two are quite the same.
- 01
Thrown
Ines throws each Halden in under four minutes, then leaves it to stiffen overnight under a damp cloth.
- 02
Dipped twice
A second dip, a few seconds long, is what makes the glaze pool darker where the shoulder turns.
- 03
Fired to 1,260°C
Forty pieces per kiln load, cooled slowly for a day. About one in eight doesn't make it.
“I stopped trying to make them match years ago. The kiln has opinions, and they're usually better than mine.”
The slow morning set
Breakfast, carried properly.
A Rook mug, the Still Water carafe and an Arc tray to carry them back to bed. Three makers, one tray, and the best ten minutes of the day.
- Rook Stoneware Mug$32
- Still Water Carafe$52
- Arc Serving Tray$74
$158 for all three
